About Metam-Sodium

Metam-Sodium is a highly effective contact biocide, or in other words, it is a chemical substance capable of significantly reducing living organisms on contact.  Metam-Sodium is active on a wide range of diseases, weeds, nematodes, and other soilborne pathogens under numerous cultural conditions and practices.  Metam-Sodium can be an efficient replacement for methyl-bromide under proper circumstances.

  • Metam-Sodium is an unusual and remarkable product because it can be used without crop injury prior to planting any food, fiber or ornamental crop after a sufficient waiting period.  It has also been used to prevent transmission of Dutch Elm and Oak Wilt diseases.

  • Because of its broad spectrum, treatment with Metam-Sodium can often reduce or eliminate the need for other pesticide treatments such as the use of fungicides, herbicides and nematicides.

  • Metam-Sodium is the only fumigant that can be used prior to seeding or transplanting any food, fiber, or ornamental crop.

  • Improved growth response and yield increases have been documented where crops are planted following a treatment with Metam-Sodium.  Larger packs of fruits and vegetables and more uniform growth have also been documented.

  • Metam-Sodium is a quick-acting biocide that leaves no residual in the soil after only two to four weeks.

  • Crops can be planted two to four weeks after an application of Metam-Sodium, depending on climate conditions and soil type, without the stress associated with residual herbicides.

  • Treatments of Metam-Sodium can be made by a number of versatile application methods, including through irrigation systems.

  • Metam-Sodium can be used for flat or bed fumigation and applied broadcast or in a band.

  • Unlike many other fumigants, Metam-Sodium has not been found to be harmful to the ozone layer.

  • Metam-Sodium leaves behind no residue in food crops.

Recent regulations and laws governing pesticide use are reducing the number of control options farmers have to use against important crop pests.  In many cases, Metam-Sodium can be used when other materials cannot.
